Our vision is to ensure that Aboriginal people benefit socially, culturally and economically from the secure possession of their land, waters and seas.  The NLC’s Community Planning and Development program supports Aboriginal groups to plan, fund and undertake their own development projects using an empowerment-based model. About the RoleThe NLC is seeking an experienced lawyer to provide high quality advice and representation to the NLC and Aboriginal people and groups working with the NLC’s Community Planning and Development program.   The main responsibilities of the role include:Working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, in particular with the members of the NLC’s Community Planning and Development team to ensure the effective implementation and delivery of the NLC’s Community Planning and Development Program and statutory functions under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (ALRA), the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA), and other relevant Commonwealth and Northern Territory legislation.Providing legal advice and representation to the NLC and Aboriginal people and groups working with the NLC’s Community Planning and Development Program including negotiating, preparing and administering funding agreements with contractors.Providing legal advice and representation to Aboriginal people and groups, Aboriginal Land Trusts, Prescribed Bodies Corporate and other Aboriginal associations in relation to the use, management, occupation or development of their lands and seas (including for resources and energy projects, national parks, tourism, public services, townships and commercial enterprises).Strategically managing projects, including by coordinating and facilitating consultations across the Top End of the Northern Territory. About YouTo thrive in this role, you will have:Qualified as a legal practitioner and be admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.A minimum of 3 years’ post admission experience in legal practice (an outstanding candidate with lesser post admission experience may be considered).Highly developed oral, interpersonal, written and legal research skills.Experience in commercial and corporate matters, including negotiating contracts and commercial documents.Possession of a "C" Class licence and ability to operate 4WD vehicles.Preparedness to travel extensively to regional and remote locations in the   Northern Territory to confer with constituents.Remuneration and Benefits:Contract Term: Three yearsLocation: DarwinSalary: $75,006 to $125,190 plus allowancesFBT exempt salary packaging benefits pay13% superannuation contribution5 weeks annual leave (pro rata) & 17.5% annual leave loadingWe strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply. How to Apply:A full Position Description may be obtained by clicking on this vacancy on our website https://jobs.nlc.org.au/ .
