About the NLCThe Northern Land Council (NLC) was established under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act in 1976, to assist Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands, waters and seas. Nearly 50 years on, we continue to serve over 50,000 Aboriginal people of the Top End and remain committed to enhancing Aboriginal peoples social, political and economic participation by supporting their aspirations and amplifying their voices on a range of issues impacting on their lands, seas, culture and communities. About the RoleWe are seeking a lawyer to join our Regional Development Legal Practice, which is responsible for working with Traditional Owners to obtain free, prior and informed consent including in the negotiation of land use agreements.ResponsibilitiesWorking with both lawyers and other professionals in a cross-cultural and cross disciplinary organisation, NLC lawyers assist the organisation and its constituents to ensure that Traditional Owners achieve and benefit from the acquisition, use, occupation and management of their lands. The roles each involve challenging but highly rewarding work as well as unique opportunities to travel across the Top End and learn to effectively engage across the diverse Indigenous cultures of this region.About youApplicants must be qualified legal practitioners admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
