About the NLCThe Northern Land Council (NLC) was established under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act in 1976 (ALRA), to assist Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands, waters and seas. Nearly 50 years on we continue to serve over 50,000 Aboriginal people of the Top End and remain committed to enhancing Aboriginal peoples social, political and economic participation by supporting their aspirations and amplifying their voices on a range of issues impacting on their lands, seas, culture and communities. About the RolesThe NLC is seeking four experienced lawyers to provide high-quality advice and representation to the NLC and Aboriginal people and groups across the NLC region. Successful applicants will have a keen interest in working in at least one of the following legal practice areas:Native Title and LitigationCommunity Planning and DevelopmentRegional Development.The main responsibilities of the roles include:Working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the effective performance of the NLC’s statutory functions under the ALRA, Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), and other relevant Commonwealth and Northern Territory legislation.Providing legal advice and representation to Aboriginal people and groups, Aboriginal Land Trusts, Prescribed Bodies Corporate and other Aboriginal associations about the use, management, occupation or development of their lands and seas (including for resources and energy projects, national parks, tourism, public services, townships and commercial enterprises).Strategically managing projects, including by coordinating and facilitating consultations across the Top End of the Northern Territory.About youTo thrive in this role, you will have:Demonstrated understanding of, and interest in, the lived experiences of Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory.Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the Top End.Admission to legal practice in a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.At least three years post-admission experience in legal practice or equivalent legal experience or knowledge.Experience and proficiency in legal drafting.Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships with colleagues and clients.Sound time management and organisational skills, including a demonstrated capacity to perform under pressure, effectively manage a busy workload, and consistently meet deadlines.Demonstrated capacity to progress complex matters and operate under broad direction with a high level of day‐to‐day autonomy, where required.Preparedness to travel extensively to regional and remote locations in the Northern Territory to confer with constituents.Remuneration and Benefits:Three (3) year fixed-term contractLocation: Darwin, NTSalary: $89,212 to $131,396AllowancesFBT-exempt salary packaging benefits pay13.5% superannuation contribution5 weeks annual leaveCultural knowledge and lived experience are central to the work that we do.
