About the NLCThe Northern Land Council (NLC) was established under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act in 1976, to assist Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands, waters and seas. 50 years on we continue to serve over 50,000 Aboriginal people of the Top End and remain committed to enhancing Aboriginal peoples social, political and economic participation by supporting their aspirations and amplifying their voices on a range of issues impacting on their lands, seas, culture and communities. About the ProgramThis program provides financial assistance to Aboriginal students, from the NLC Region who are undertaking tertiary studies. The funds will enable students to focus on their studies and can also be used to pay for expenses relating to their studies.ResponsibilitiesProvide formal details of units enrolled in at the beginning of each SemesterSatisfactorily complete units as outlined in their proposed course of study by diligently attending the necessary lectures, tutorials and other study sessions and completing all assessment requirements (students are expected to pass all subjects);In consultation with the university's Aboriginal support unit or lecturing staff, access a tutor throughout the year and consistently attend tutoring sessions if required;Provide details of academic progress, including official transcripts of academic results at the end of each semester and at other times when requested;Contact the Education and Employment Pathways Manager regularly, via phone or electronic mail to give updates on how studies/assignments are going and raise any issues of concern;Immediately notify the Education and Employment Pathways Manager if there are any changes to the proposed course of study or if any difficulties arise in meeting study commitments;Advise the Department of Human Services when they commence this program, if they are already receiving payments through that agency. Abstudy; Selection CriteriaConnection to country within the NLC regionEnrolled in a Batchelor’s degree or equivalentStudying in a field relevant to NLC interests and activitiesWhy do you want to study in your chosen field?How will this program assist you and your studies?Demonstrate Past academic achievementsFinancial Assistance:Funding of up to $25 000 to be paid to the Student in instalments as agreed between the parties per year of study provided the following conditions are met:(a) the Student provides NLC with proof of enrolment into a Batchelor’s degree (or equivalent) at the beginning of their studies [NB: proof of enrolment may be in the form of written confirmation of enrolment from the relevant university].(b) To continue receiving the funds the student needs to provide academic transcripts after each semester to demonstrate the successful completion of the Semester for each year of study for full time load or pro rata for part time load.Funds must only be used in line with the purpose of the deed and on eligible study related expenses.
